Connecting Craigmillar

Connecting Craigmillar fosters community through fun, learning and creating positive change together.

What is Connecting Craigmillar?

Connecting Craigmillar is a community project in Thistle’s Health and Wellbeing team. The project works to enable opportunities for local people to meet, have fun, learn, form new friendships and develop lasting, positive social change together.

Originally a partnership between Link Up (Inspiring Scotland) and the Thistle, the project has been running since 2016 to support people in the community. The project exists for local residents of all ages and backgrounds in Craigmillar and Niddrie (EH16 4 and EH15 3) to develop projects, groups, events, and activities around what they are interested in, and to focus on things they want to learn about and change.

The aim and ethos of the project are supporting mutual aid, social justice, informal learning, and community-led action. If you live in the area or know someone that does, you can get in touch with Connecting Craigmillar who can support you to develop an idea, passion, or interest, or act on an issue you care about.

We work in partnership with many local groups and organisations to develop activities and projects led by community members. We're open to any ideas and always keen to support different things. In the past this has included Art and Writing, photography, woodland conservation, Craigmillar and Niddrie Community Festival, food, bikes rides, community cinema club, DIY workshop space, community murals, family support (for those affected by addiction), ESOL groups, fundraising events, sports club, and much more. So, do get in contact with an idea, or if you are interested in any of the groups/activities we are currently supporting.

We are also supporting 'Let The People Sing' and the Recovery Bothy on Niddrie Mains Road, and working together with them as well as the Craigmillar and Niddrie Recovery Forum.

We work with local residents to identify collective desires and concerns, and develop ideas that help to address those. This might be one-off events, regular open access groups, or specific stand-alone projects. Some examples include:

  • Creative groups – Art Club, Tapestry, Stitching

  • Peer support groups – e.g. Men’s and Women’s Groups

  • Art exhibitions and stalls

  • Sports Clubs

  • Open Mic music events, festivals or fun days

  • Trips - basketball matches, bike rides, gallery visits

  • Parents/carers support – Mindful Mothers Circle and Tea Talk for parents with children at primary school

  • Intercultural work - Livity Youth Edinburgh, Syrian Men's Group, ESOL classe
