Sporrans in the Sand

A World and Scottish Record Holder will be setting a new first for a home based Scot this month!

Chris Dunlop, who set the World Record for the Highest ever Burns Supper in 2006 in South America, and the Scottish/British Record for the Highest Burns Supper during a wild blizzard on the Summit of Ben Nevis in 2009, will be running one of the World’s toughest endurance races – in a Kilt and Sporran! This Scottish attire has been kindly donated by The Scotland Kilt Company (see below for contact details).

The 39 year old, based in Glasgow/Edinburgh (delete as applicable) will be running the Namib Desert Challenge, a 5 day 220 kilometre race over the World’s highest sand dunes in the Namib Desert, Namibia, one of the harshest environments in the world. Chris will be doing this organised event on his own, and will be the first home based Scot to undertake the challenge. The race runs between the 21st and 25th of February, 2010. See below for further information.

He will be raising money for Thistle Foundation, a Scottish Charity supporting people with disabilities and health conditions. Thistle Foundation offers a wide variety of services from tailored Supported Living packages to Health and Wellbeing facilities and accredited training courses. Working with people across the central belt of Scotland, Thistle Foundation recognises that each person is the primary authority in their own life and supports them to lead the life they choose. See below for further information and contact details.

Chris commented:
“This will be my toughest challenge yet. Although I’ve climbed in some of the coldest and harshest mountains in the World, surviving for 5 days in the desert, never mind running more than a marathon a day on my own, carrying all my own gear, is completely new to me. But it’s certainly worth it, to raise money for a charity like Thistle Foundation, who provides a terrific service to so many people which helps them to live their lives to the full. The work Thistle Foundation does, and the achievements of those they help, tower above anything I’ve ever done”.

All money raised will be donated directly to Thistle Foundation and will in no way pay for, or subsidise the run itself.
